Metropolitan Railway<\/strong><\/h1>\n

In the future, rail transport is to be the backbone of the entire public transport system in the Metropolis. This requires the establishment of the Metropolitan Railway. The first stage of its construction is a concept that was developed by experts from the Silesian University of Technology.<\/strong>\u00a0Kolei Metropolitalnej na terenie G\u00f3rno\u015bl\u0105sko-Zag\u0142\u0119biowskiej Metropolii\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The concept of the Metropolitan Railway is a document that answers the most important question: how rail transport should be developed in Metropolis GZM. Work on it lasted from August 2018 to January 2019, when the concept was presented during the session of the Metropolitan Assembly.<\/p>\n

It contained four stages of rail development \u2013 from the basic to the most developed, the cost of which was estimated at over PLN 16 billion. The implementation of the entire project is scheduled for 2019-2039. Each subsequent stage of the project contains all the solutions indicated in the previous stages and additional solutions.<\/p>\n

Stage 0<\/strong>\u00a0assumes the functioning of two main transport corridors: west \u2013 east (Gliwice \u2013 Katowice \u2013 D\u0105browa G\u00f3rnicza Z\u0105bkowice) and south \u2013 north (Tychy Lodowisko \u2013 Katowice \u2013 Tarnowskie G\u00f3ry) and the purchase of new trains. Such solutions will allow more efficient use of existing infrastructure opportunities. The purchase of new trains by GZM will enable the launch of further connections on these routes. During peak hours, courses are to depart every 15 minutes. In the first place, due to the number of travelers, it would be a connection from Gliwice to D\u0105browa G\u00f3rnicza.<\/p>\n

Stage 1<\/strong>\u00a0is an extension of the previous solution. Here, the most important aspect is the construction of new tracks dedicated to the Metropolitan Railway \u2013 from Gliwice to D\u0105browa G\u00f3rnicza and from Nowy Bieru\u0144 to Tarnowskie G\u00f3ry. The total is nearly 220 km of a single track. Thanks to this, the Metropolitan Railway timetable would not interfere with trains of other carriers. In addition, there would be no hierarchy of the order of passages on these sections, according to which local trains must give way to international and national trains. 26 railway stops will be built or revitalized; their location was determined on the basis of the population density of individual areas. In order to operate more connections, it will also be necessary to acquire new rolling stock. 32 trains will be needed.<\/p>\n

Stage 2<\/strong> zak\u0142ada dalsz\u0105 rozbudow\u0119 torowisk kolei tradycyjnej na potrzeby Kolei Metropolitalnej. Dodatkowo powsta\u0107 ma lekka kolej miejska oraz rozwa\u017cone rozwi\u0105zanie typu monorail. Lekka kolej miejska mia\u0142aby po\u0142\u0105czy\u0107 Gliwice z Tychami przez Rud\u0119 \u015al\u0105sk\u0105 i Miko\u0142\u00f3w. Natomiast monorail m\u00f3g\u0142by po\u0142\u0105czy\u0107 Mi\u0119dzynarodowy Port Lotniczy w Pyrzowicach z Katowicami oraz Sosnowcem. Jego powstanie uzale\u017cnione jest jednak od zabezpieczenia na ten cel odpowiednich \u015brodk\u00f3w oraz od dalszego tempa rozwoju lotniska w Pyrzowicach.<\/p>\n

Wariant 3<\/strong>\u00a0is the maximum version of rail transport development in the Metropolis. It assumes further extension of the light railway, which from Gliwice through Knur\u00f3w and Giera\u0142towice would reach Ornontowice and Orzesze. It also assumes the development of a traditional railway on the Gliwice \u2013 Ruda \u015al\u0105ska \u2013 Katowice route.<\/p>\n

The Metropolitan Railway Concept is the first step in building the Metropolitan Railway system. The document was developed in consultation with the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship, the Governor of the Silesian Voivodeship, PKP PLK S.A., representatives of GZM cities and municipalities, as well as entities connected with the railway market. The developed Metropolitan Railway Concept is a prelude to further study and design work.<\/p>\n

The stakeholders\u2019 proposals and suggestions were analysed by the design team from the Silesian University of Technology. This led to the creation of a Supplement to the Metropolitan Railway Concept, which provides for modified scenarios for the development of the Metropolitan Railway:<\/p>\n

Wariant 1A. <\/strong>This scenario envisages that the length of the Metropolitan Railway network will be increased by approx. 85 km and 10 new passenger stops will be built.<\/p>\n

Wariant 2A. <\/strong>This scenario envisages that the length of the Metropolitan Railway network will be increased by approx. 105 km and 13 new passenger stops will be built.<\/p>\n

Wariant 3A. <\/strong>This scenario envisages that the length of the Metropolitan Railway network will be increased by approx. 72 km and 14 new passenger stops will be built.<\/p>\n

The next step will be to develop the \u201cPreliminary Feasibility Study for the Metropolitan Railway in the Metropolis GZM\u201d, which will provide more detailed data on the investment costs for each scenario presented in the Metropolitan Railway Concept and explain what the exact layout of the routes may look like and where the new railway stops should be located.<\/p>\n
